Bushfire near Ballarat under control

A bushfire in Victoria's west that may have been started by a campfire has been brought under control .

A blaze that ripped through bushland west of Melbourne and destroyed a shed has been brought under control as investigators follow up reports that a campfire started the emergency.

A community warning was downgraded on Tuesday for the blaze at Mount Clear and Sebastopol in Ballarat.

"Firefighters have been able to stop the spread of the fire. Staying close to a building you can shelter in is the safest option as conditions can change suddenly," the Vic Emergency read.

The cause of the blaze will be investigated. Initial reports have suggested it might have started from a campfire.

The Country Fire Authority said while the fire has been contained there are still fires burning and smoke will remain in the area.

Firefighters will continue to patrol the fire zone later on Tuesday.

At the height of the blaze 25 firefighting trucks, a firebombing blame and helicopter were used to tackle the flames.
