Bushfire threat downgraded in WA's north

A bushfire that was threatening homes in Western Australia's north has been downgraded with firefighters starting to gaining the upper hand.

Firefighters have been able to get on top of bushfire that was threatening homes in Western Australia's north.

An advice alert was issued on Wednesday night replacing a watch and act for people at Thangoo Homestead, Barn Hill Station, Eco Beach and surrounding areas in the Shire of Broome.

"The alert level for this fire has been downgraded as firefighters are getting on top of the fire and weather conditions have eased," the WA Department of Fire and Emergency Services said.

"Although there is no immediate danger you need to be aware and keep up to date in case the situation changes."

However the department warned there was still a lot of smoke in the area and the blaze was still out-of-control.

Some roads have been closed and motorists are warned to avoid the area.

Firefighters are working to strengthen containment lines and build fire breaks.

Local pastoralists, ranger groups and others are also assisting.

The bushfire, which was sparked by lightening on October 11, has so far burnt about 500,000 hectares.
