Bushfire threat in rural WA towns

A bushfire watch and act alert has been issued for Walebing and Bindi Bindi near Moora in Western Australia's Wheatbelt region.

A fast-moving and out-of-control bushfire is posing a possible threat to lives and homes in Western Australia's Wheatbelt region.

A watch and act alert has been issued for Walebing and Bindi Bindi in the Shire of Moora, northeast of Perth.

"You need to leave or get ready to actively defend," the Department of Fire and Emergency Services warned on Thursday afternoon.

"Homes are not designed or constructed to withstand a fire in today's conditions."

The fire is burning on both sides of Great Northern Highway and spot fires are starting up to 500 metres ahead.

The blaze started near the intersection of the highway and Cranmore Road in Walebing.

The cause of the bushfire is unknown.
