An emergency bushfire warning for the northwest Victorian town of Yaapeet has been downgraded.

Residents of Yaapeet and Nypo, in the Wimmera region, were warned of the impacts of a 7000 hectare bushfire burning nearby on Wednesday afternoon.

The CFA downgraded the warning to a watch and act on Wednesday night, but said the fire was yet to be controlled.

The fire was started by a series of lightning strikes in the Wyperfeld National Park on Tuesday evening.
