A large bushfire is no longer threatening homes in a central Queensland mining town.

A watch and act alert issued earlier on Sunday for residents in the 1500-strong community of Mount Britton, southwest of Mackay, has been cancelled.

Queensland Fire and Emergency Services says firefighters are still working to contain the grass fire burning at nearby Homevale National Park.

Residents were earlier told to consider fleeing as there were fears the fire would reach Mount Britton.
