Business, consumers buoyed by new PM

Business and consumers have been buoyed by the change of prime minister, but Treasurer Scott Morrison says future confidence has to be earned.

Treasurer Scott Morrison says the government must continue to earn the trust and confidence of the Australian community after two reports showed a positive response to last month's change of leadership.

In National Australia Bank's first business survey since Malcolm Turnbull toppled Tony Abbott for the Liberal leadership, confidence reversed the fall of the previous month.

"Solid business conditions and some dissipation of financial market jitters may have also contributed to the result," NAB economists said.

Consumers haven't yet tired of the new leadership with confidence rising to a 15-week high.

The ANZ-Roy Morgan weekly consumer confidence gauge jumped 5.1 per cent, more than reversing falls over the previous fortnight.

ANZ chief economist Warren Hogan says the results likely reflect faith in the Turnbull government.

But to sustain confidence the government needed to present a clear economic story to the country.

"This is necessary in the current economic environment, where there are numerous headwinds to sentiment and economic activity including soft wages growth, weak investment and an easing outlook for the housing sector," Mr Hogan said.

Mr Morrison said this confidence is not something that the government will ever take for granted.

"The way it is earned is by doing the things that assist those businesses and Australians to move through this transition in the economy," the treasurer told reporters in Canberra.

In a largely upbeat assessment of the outlook, deputy Reserve Bank governor Philip Lowe also warned an investment conference in Sydney that care must be taken not to allow uncertainty about the future to "mutate into chronic pessimism".

"If that were to happen, many of the opportunities that we do have are likely to go begging," he said.

Earlier, Mr Turnbull reassured his coalition colleagues the government's core message remains clearly focused on the economy.

The prime minister told a meeting of Liberal and Nationals MPs the government must promote jobs and growth through a more innovative and competitive economy.

"We are putting measures in place to do just that," Mr Turnbull said.
