Federal Labor frontbencher Mark Butler will seek pre-selection for the South Australian seat of Hindmarsh after a redistribution abolished his electorate of Port Adelaide.

Current sitting Hindmarsh MP, Labor's Steve Georganas will seek to move to the neighbouring seat of Adelaide, due to be vacated by former Labor minister Kate Ellis.

Mr Butler says Hindmarsh seat will take in much of his old seat and the electoral commission redistribution also means he now lives in the electorate.

"Hindmarsh, after the next election, will essentially become an amalgam of 60,000 voters from the existing Hindmarsh, and 60,000 voters from the existing Port Adelaide," he told ABC radio on Wednesday.

"So it could quite easily have been named Port Adelaide, because it's really a 50/50 proposition.

"I think it was a pretty natural conclusion that I be the new candidate for Hindmarsh."

Mr Georganas said following the boundary changes he now found himself living in the seat of Adelaide.

"A lot of the people I represented in Hindmarsh are now in Adelaide," he said.
