Butler trade, freshmen highlight NBA Draft

Philadelphia has done what everyone expected in picking Markelle Fultz No.1 in the NBA Draft but Minnesota upstaged every other team, trading for Jimmy Butler.

Philadelphia 76ers did what everyone expected and picked Markelle Fultz with the first pick of Thursday night's NBA draft.

The Los Angeles Lakers followed by taking Lonzo Ball as the draft started with a pair of freshmen point guards.

However, Minnesota Timberwolves pulled off the biggest surprise, and traded for three-time All-Star Jimmy Butler.

In the blockbuster move of draft night, the Bulls traded Butler and the 16th overall pick Thursday night to the Timberwolves for Zach LaVine, Kris Dunn and the No. 7 overall pick as the Wolves try to finally put an end to a 13-year playoff drought.

There will be a strong Australian flavour to the 76ers with 21-year-old Jonah Bolden drafted at No.36 to play alongside last year's No.1 overall pick Ben Simmons.

The 2017 draft was a record-setting night for freshmen.

The first seven picks were one-and-dones and a record 16 of them heard their names called in the first round.

"In high school I told my trainer Keith I wanted to be the No. 1 player in the country and the No. 1 draft pick, so it was a goal I set out there, and that's what I was striving for," Fultz said.

Ball then got the wish he and his father, LaVar, wanted all along by staying in Los Angeles, where he starred last season at UCLA.

"Tonight was supposed to be a good night. Definitely was, and now I'm just focused on playing," Lonzo Ball said.

"Just want to get on the court."

The Celtics then took Duke small forward Jayson Tatum at No. 3, Phoenix Suns selected Josh Jackson of Kansas and Sacramento Kings took Kentucky guard De'Aaron Fox at No. 5.

The run of freshmen continued when Orlando Magic selected Jonathan Isaac and Minnesota Timberwolves took Finnish seven-footer Lauri Markkanen.

French guard Frank Ntilikina was taken eighth by New York Knicks, guard Dennis Smith ninth by Dallas Mavericks with Sacramento Kings-bound seven-foot centre Zach Collins rounding out the top 10.

Only two seniors went in the first round -- the lowest number in the modern history of the draft.

Derrick White, who went to the Spurs, and Josh Hart, who went to the Lakers, had to wait until the last two picks of round number one to hear their names called.

Among the undrafted players were Australian duo Isaac Humphries and Mangkok Mathiang.
