CA XI fall to another big one-day cup loss

Victoria needed just over 11 overs to chase down the CA XI's tiny victory target of 80 to win their one-day cup clash by nine wickets in Sydney.

Cricket Australia XI captain Will Bosisto says his side have the ability to compete in the domestic one-day cup despite being on the end of another massive loss on Wednesday.

The CA XI crashed to a nine-wicket defeat at Hurstville Oval, with Victoria requiring just 11.1 overs to overhaul a modest target of 80.

It was four overs faster than the previous shortest innings by the winning team, set by Western Australia last year.

The thumping came two days after the young side made their debut in the competition against Steve Smith's NSW and went down by a humiliating 279 runs.

"We have the talent, we just haven't performed to the best of our ability," said Bosisto, who top-scored with 21 in the CA XI's total of 79 two days after 700 runs were scored on the same ground in South Australia's win over Western Australia.

"We are absolutely (better than that). We are really disappointed. That was far below our expectations as a group coming in, both performances."

The CA XI have unexpectedly come up against NSW and Victorian sides full of Test players who were meant to be in Bangladesh before the tour was postponed due to security fears.

Nonetheless, the two thumpings will be a concern for CA officials given the young side, made up of players in their early 20s who just missed out on selection in their state squads, haven't been anywhere near competitive.

At Bankstown Oval on Monday, the Blues made 3-338 before blasting the CA XI out for 59 in the 25th over.

However, Bosisto believes he's gained a lot despite the lop-sided results.

"The whole idea of the Cricket Australia XI is to give 11 young guys exposure, and also what it is we have to do to improve to be able to perform at this level," said Bosisto.

"I know from a personal perspective I have learned a lot in just these two matches."

Aaron Finch top-scored for Victoria, cracking a six to win the match and ending on 45 not out from just 30 deliveries.

Earlier, Victoria's fast bowler James Pattinson, who is aiming for inclusion in Australia's side for the first Test against New Zealand next month, bowled with pace and accuracy to claim 4-18 off his ten overs.

"My aim going into the tournament was just to run in and hit the wicket hard, and it worked pretty well for me today," said Pattinson.

"It is hard for a side like that (CA XI) who are inexperienced, and they have come up against two teams where most of the players have played for Australia. It is tough for them, but it is good experience as well."

The Bushrangers lost only opener Marcus Stoinis (21) in their run chase, while Cameron White was unbeaten on 14.

For the CA XI, only three batsmen reached double figures.

Left-arm spinner Jon Holland (3-17) claimed the last three CA XI wickets to fall while pacemen John Hastings (2-13) and Scott Boland (1-26) chipped in.
