There might not be any household names in the squad, but Greg Chappell insists the Cricket Australia XI are not just making up the numbers in this season's domestic one-day cup.
The team enters October's 50-over competition for the first time, giving players who have missed out on state selection a chance to shine at an elite level.
South Australian allrounder Alex Gregory will captain the side, the 20-year-old one of six players - along with WA allrounder Hilton Cartwright, Queensland wicketkeeper Jimmy Peirson, Tasmania batsman Ben McDermott, Victoria allrounder Matt Short and WA quick Matt Dixon - who have played at state level in domestic one-day cricket.
McDermott, Dixon, Cartwright and Queensland allrounder Jack Wildermuth have first-class experience.
Cricket Australia national talent manager Chappell said the concept was designed to give high-potential players more opportunities.
"They will be competitive," Chappell said.
"There will be some familiar names from having played a little bit of first-class cricket or a little bit of 50-over cricket for their state previously."
Queensland have five players in the 14-man squad, while WA has three representatives. There are two players each from Victoria and NSW and one apiece from Tasmania and SA.
The CA XI will start their campaign against NSW at Bankstown on October 5.
Cricket Australia XI: Alex Gregory (capt), Sam Heazlett, James Peirson, Ben McDermott, James Bazley, Seb Gotch, Matthew Short, Jack Wildermuth, Jhye Richardson, Liam Hatcher, Mitch Swepson, Hilton Cartwright, Riley Ayre, Matthew Dixon.
