The Cairns street where eight children were killed last December has been blocked off in preparation for the demolition of the house in which they died.

Four girls and four boys, aged between two and 14-years-old, were found dead in their Murray Street housing commission home.

37-year-old Raina Mersane Ina Thaiday, the mother of seven of the children and aunt to the eighth, has been charged with their murders.

The demolition is expected to take about a week because of asbestos in the building.

There are plans to erect a memorial to the children on the site after further consolation with relatives from the Aboriginal and Torres Strait islander communities.

The demolition is expected to be highly emotional for family and residents of the street.

“They’re glad the house if finally coming down and are sick of people pulling up in their cars and taking pictures,” Yodie Batzke Cairns community advocate told SBS World News.

“The general feeling is that the families sick of the sight of the police prescence.

“We’ve got families continually being asked if they want counselling and they just want to get on with their lives.”
