Calais migrant killed by British driver

A migrant from Eritrea has died after being hit by a British driver on a road near the French port city of Calais, police say.

A migrant from Eritrea has died after being hit by a car on the A16 road near the French port city of Calais, where thousands of people from the Middle East and Africa are camped trying to reach Britain.

The person was one of a group of migrants trying to put obstacles on the road to slow down vehicles in a bid to climb aboard them, the police said.

They added that the British driver had reported Sunday's incident.

Meanwhile French foreign minister called on the UK to take in minors from the Jungle refugee camp in Calais.

Speaking to French broadcaster RTL, Bernard Cazeneuve said several hundred unaccompanied minors currently living in the Jungle had family members in the UK.

"I solemnly ask the United Kingdom to assume its moral duty," said Cazeneuve, referring to the integration of the young refugees, hours ahead of his scheduled meeting with his British counterpart, Amber Rudd.

The French minister said during the meeting he would also ask the UK to accommodate other migrants in the camps with relatives in Britain.

"The United Kingdom must assume its responsibilities," he said.

Cazeneuve confirmed plans to dismantle the Jungle by the end of the year and said preparations were being made to secure asylum centre accommodation around France for the movement of up to 10,000 people.
