Australian cycling star Caleb Ewan has crashed out of the opening round of the Bay Classic criterium series.

The two-time defending champion had led the field into the last corner at Geelong Ritchie Boulevard circuit for the sprint finish when he crashed heavily.

He appeared to have escaped serious injury but the skin on Ewan's left shoulder and hip was shredded and he rode to the team hotel immediately after the race for treatment.
