A specialist in counter-terrorism is backing calls for the reappointment of a watchdog to monitor the impact of new national security laws.
Since April, Australia has been without an independent national security legislation monitor following the resignation of Bret Walker.
The joint parliamentary committee on intelligence and security has called for the federal government to fill the vacancy as a matter of absolute urgency.
Doctor Keiran Hardy is a lecturer in national security at the University of New South Wales.
He says it's important the job is filled because of the likelihood Australia will impose more control orders under changes to the law.
