Call for rich to pay tax as Twiggy donates

Parliament shouldn't applaud rich individuals who give one-off donations but ensure big business pays its fair share of tax, the Australian Greens argue.

As mining magnate Andrew "Twiggy" Forrest prepares to unveil one of Australia's largest philanthropic donations, some federal MPs have called for big business to pay their fair share of tax.

Mr Forrest is tight-lipped on the dollar figure until it is announced by the federal government at a ceremony to be attended by Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull and Opposition Leader Bill Shorten in Canberra on Monday.

Greens MP Adam Bandt said wealthy Australians should be making regular contributions.

"The rich in this country need to start paying their fair share (of tax)," Mr Bandt told reporters in Canberra.

"Perhaps part of the reason we are seeing these kinds of donations is because corporate Australia knows it has been taking the public for a ride for too long and needs to sharpen up its image."

Social Services Minister Christian Porter said Mr Bandt's views were mean spirited.

"The best possible way to lift rates of philanthropy is through individual example," he told reporters.

"What an amazing thing Andrew Forrest is doing."

Labor MP Matt Keough said increasing philanthropy was a good thing.

"But, I think one of the principle things we want to see is those earning a lot of money... paying their fair share of tax," he said.
