Call to rename Opera theatre for Dame Joan

The New South Wales Opposition says it will rename a theatre at the Sydney Opera House to honour the late Dame Joan Sutherland if it wins the March state election.

Opposition Leader Barry O'Farrell says he can't think of a more fitting tribute to Dame Joan than to rename the Opera Theatre after Australia's musical great.

Dame Joan, who died at 83 at her home near Geneva in Switzerland after a long illness, came to international renown after travelling to London as the winner of a singing competition in her native Sydney.
