Call to scrap 987 Victorian speeding fines

Police and VicRoads are considering the Victorian speed camera watchdog's recommendation to scrap 987 speeding fines issued to motorists near roadworks.

Call to scrap 987 Victorian speeding fines

Almost 1000 Melbourne motorists may have their speeding fines scrapped due to inadequate signage.

Almost 1000 motorists may have their speeding fines scrapped because of inadequate signage near roadworks on a busy Melbourne road.

Signs warning of temporary 40km/h zones near roadworks on the Western Ring Road at the Keilor Park Drive bridge on June 30 were inadequate, Victorian Road Safety Camera Commissioner Gordon Lewis found.

It was only fair that Victoria Police withdraw those infringement notices and issue warnings in their place, he said in a report released on Thursday.

Victorian Premier Denis Napthine said he supported the commissioner's recommendations.

"What we have had is the traffic camera commissioner make a very strong recommendation, we support those recommendations and we understand and we are advised that Victoria Police are considering those recommendations," Dr Napthine said.

However, he did not take the next step to call for the fines to be withdrawn.

"That's a decision for the police. It's not appropriate for the premier of Victoria to interfere in operational decisions of the police," he said.

A spokesman for Victoria Police said it was reviewing the commissioner's report and would respond as soon as possible.

He said the 987 infringement notices issued would be placed on hold until the matter was finalised.

VicRoads would work closely with Victoria Police and Civic Compliance Victoria and provide a response to Mr Lewis' recommendations in due course, it said in a statement.
