The boss of the nation's peak farming and agriculture body has hit back at lewd criticism directed at her on social media.

National Farmers' Federation president Fiona Simson took to Twitter to call out the comment which was posted on an image shared by a NSW Shooters, Fishers and Farmers Party MP.
The image quickly attracted debate over the Farmers' Federation's position on a royal commission into the Murray-Darling Basin Plan.

However, one comment by a Facebook user which compared Ms Simson's meeting with the Prime Minister to that of a sex act drew particular attention from the Federation president.
Ms Simson's response has received support from other social media users, including Alannah & Madeline Foundation Chief Executive Lesley Podesta.
While condemning the offending remark, others suggest the issue is not representative of the challenges facing female representation in the sector.
