South Australia should be the final resting place for explorer Matthew Flinders after the discovery of his remains in London, SA-BEST says.

MP Frank Pangallo says he will write to Premier Steven Marshall and Adelaide Lord Mayor Sandy Verschoor calling on them to investigate having the remains of Captain Flinders reinterred either in Adelaide or in another location in SA.

"Flinders was one of the greatest explorers whose voyages put this country literally on the map and paved the way for our colonisation, particularly in SA and Tasmania," Mr Pangallo said on Sunday.

The explorer's remains were found this week in England by archaeologists digging underneath a London train station.

He made three voyages to the southern ocean between 1791 and 1810.

In the second voyage, George Bass and Flinders confirmed that Van Diemen's Land, now Tasmania, was an island.

In the third voyage, Flinders circumnavigated the mainland.

Mr Pangallo said a prominent place in the centre of Adelaide could be found for Flinders' remains.

Or he could be buried at another suitable location, perhaps at Encounter Bay, south of the city, or on Kangaroo Island.

"Matthew Flinders should not be forgotten for another 205 years," Mr Pangallo said.
