Calls to cut sentence discounts in SA

SA-BEST MP Frank Pangallo wants the state government to reconsider discounts given to offenders for early guilty pleas.

SA-BEST MP Frank Pangallo has called for an urgent review of South Australian laws that give generous sentencing discounts to offenders who plead guilty to serious crimes.

Mr Pangallo says there's been community uproar over a hoon driver who has pleaded guilty to causing the death of an Adelaide mother in a high-speed crash and is entitled to a discount of up to 40 per cent off his jail term because he pleaded guilty at an early stage.

"Something is very wrong with our system when that is allowed to occur because it saves the government time and money going to court," he said on Wednesday.
