The Australian Council of Social Service (ACOSS) says there aren't enough resources to support people who are living below the poverty line.
Around the country housing and homelessness services are critical according a national report.
And now, these organisations are calling on politicians to take the matter seriously.
Now we've got 500 organisations around the country saying it's reached crisis point," says Roland Manderson from Anglicare Australia.
"So it's a national issues that there's not enough housing, it's a national issue that there is not enough housing for people living on a low income and we all know what the consequences of that are."
Jennifer Clarke from Homelessness Australia has also backed calls for greater government action.
"The government's need to recognise that the money we spend on housing and homelessness now will save us money in the future," she said.
The results from a survey done by the Australian Council of Social Service say about 1 in 5 of those people seeking help are Indigenous.
"We found that they number up to 20 percent for the housing and homeless services and up to 20 percent for legal services," says Tessa Boyd-Caine, deputy chief executive of ACOSS.
"Both of which were services having to turn away large number of people because they cannot meet demand."
