As friends club together to put their London neighbourhoods back together after last week's violence, the political debate about rebuilding British society is also taking place.
British Prime Minister David Cameron has promised "no nonsense" policing, tougher sentencing and a sweeping review of schools, welfare and parenting in the wake of the UK riots.
He said parts of the UK have suffered a “moral collapse” with irresponsibility, selfishness and people in society “behaving as if their actions don't have consequences.”
Opposition leader Ed Miliband accused the PM of playing to the newspapers. But Cameron said a concerted “all-out war on gangs and gang culture” was his priority.
He said gangs were “a major criminal disease that has affected streets and estates across our country.”
“Stamping out the gangs should be a new national priority,” he added.
