Campaign targets indigenous jail rates

A campaign aimed at reducing indigenous incarceration rates is being supported by a collective of both indigenous and non-indigenous leaders, Jeannette Francis reports.

It aims to raise awareness about an alternative method to the dealing with crime.

Indigenous incarceration rates have increased in the last decade.

Indigenous people are 14 times more likely to be imprisoned than their non-indigenous counterparts.

That figure is 28 per cent for indigenous juveniles.

In New South Wales, nearly half of juveniles in detention are Aboriginal - some 48 per cent.

In Western Australia that number is almost three quarters at 72.5 per cent.
