Campbell wary of sister backlash

Cate Campbell is wary of her sister Bronte's response after becoming the Rio Olympic favourite by setting a new 100m freestyle world record in Brisbane.

Forget her rivals, Cate Campbell expects her stunning 100m freestyle world record to fire up her sister Bronte the most ahead of the Rio Olympics.

Campbell, 24, will have a target on her head at the Games after emerging as the overwhelming 100m favourite by clocking a blistering 52.06 seconds at the Brisbane Grand Prix on Saturday night.

It eclipsed German Britta Steffen's mark by 0.01 of a second set at the 2009 world titles in a now banned supersuit.

Campbell became the first Australian swimmer to set an individual world record since the controversial 2008-09 supersuit period.

It fired a warning shot to her overseas foes.

But it was her sister - reigning 100m world champion Bronte - that Campbell believed would respond with all guns blazing.

Bronte Campbell missed the 100m final on Saturday night due to illness.

Cate Campbell expects to be back on her sister's infamous "hit list" - a document Bronte has drawn up of foes she wants to avenge during her career.

"She would be sitting at home thinking 'just you wait until we get back to training'," she laughed.

"I am No.1 on her hit list again."

Bronte Campbell initially ticked her sister off her list when she emerged from her famous sibling's shadow at the 2015 world titles, becoming only the third woman to claim the 50m-100m double.

She ended Cate Campbell's three year unbeaten run over 100m at the meet.

Cate Campbell turned the tables at the Olympic trials as Bronte battled a shoulder injury she will still be managing at Rio.

Now Cate Campbell has well and truly thrown down the gauntlet after her stunning world record that left swimming great Dawn Fraser in awe pool-side.

Cate Campbell is now the seventh Australian woman to have broken the 100m world record.

The sisters' coach Simon Cusack said Bronte Campbell would toast her sibling's success - then plot her downfall.

"She will be immensely proud of her sister," he said.

"But Bronte is a very competitive woman.

"The bar has been raised now.

"She will respond."
