Four Royal Navy sailors have been charged with sexual assault in Canada following an incident at a barracks in Nova Scotia.

Canada's military has charged four members of the Royal Navy with sexual assault.

The Canadian Forces National Investigation Service said on Friday that the British sailors were charged for their role in a "group sexual assault" in barracks in Shearwater, Nova Scotia on Thursday.

Prosecutor Scott Morrison said the British sailors were in Nova Scotia playing in a hockey tournament with Canadian Armed Forces. They were identified as Craig Stoner, Darren Smalley, Joshua Finbow and Simon Radford.

The sailors are being held and are due to return to court on Monday.
