Canada cracks down on recreational drones

Canada is cracking down on recreational drone users to stop the devices flying too close to aircraft.

Canada is bringing in strict measures for the recreational use of drones.

Transport Minister Marc Garneau announced on Thursday restrictions to curb the number of incidents in which recreational drones have flown too close to planes.

Recreational drone operators must now mark their devices with their contact information and cannot fly them at night or in cloudy conditions.

Drones will no longer be allowed to fly higher than 90m, within 75m of buildings, vehicles or people, or within 9km of airports.

Penalties include fines up to $C3000 ($A2934) and up to $C15,000 for corporations.

"I'm taking strong measures now before a drone hits an aeroplane and causes a catastrophic event. That's the kind of nightmare scenario that keeps me awake at night," Garneau said.

Commercial, academic and research drones are exempt.
