Canada's Conservative Party has turned comments from Prime Minister Tony Abbott into a political fundraising campaign.

Mr Abbott was effusive in his praise of Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper when he visited Ottawa this week.

"He has been regarded as something of a beacon to centre-right parties around the world and certainly I have regarded Stephen Harper as an exemplar of a contemporary, centre-right prime minister," Mr Abbott said at the time.

The quote has now been used by Fred DeLorey, director of political operations for the Conservative Party of Canada, for an internet fundraising campaign.

In the email to supporters he says Mr Abbott is a "good conservative, a strong leader and a close friend of Canada" who had thanked Mr Harper for his leadership on the world stage.

"Will you chip in $5 or whatever you can afford to support our prime minister's strong leadership on the world stage?" the email says.

Mr Abbott was the first Australian prime minister to visit Canada since John Howard in 2006.

Mr Harper faces a national election in late 2015.
