Canberra golfer claims world junior crown

Canberra youngster Adam Thorp has sunk a 4m birdie putt at the final hole to win the Junior World Championships in San Diego.

Australian teenager Adam Thorp has pulled off a remarkable victory in the Junior World Championships in San Diego, California.

Thorp, who will turn 18 on July 22, finished with a final-round 73 for a four-round total of four-under par 284 to win the coveted prize by a shot from fast-finishing American, Chase Sienkiewicz.

The Canberra-based Thorp becomes the fifth Australian to win the title.

He joins an honour roll that includes Queensland product Jason Day (2004) and 1991 winner Tiger Woods.

The final round was a drama-charged affair.

Thorp, who had said overnight his plan was to be patient on the first six holes before going on the attack, was cruising when he reached the turn at six under the card.

The pressure of leading soon began to tell and a string of bogeys on the back nine saw his advantage cut to one shot with three holes to play.

Thorp then fell to a share of the lead after another bogey on the 17th.

But he saved his best for last and finished in style with a stunning birdie from 4m on the par-5 18th to grab the championship by a shot.

"Tiger and Jason are by far my two biggest sporting idols so for me to join them is just unreal," Thorp said.
