Canberra pinpointing tight NRL finishes

Canberra prop Junior Paulo says the team has been simulating close finishes in a bid to arrest their poor NRL record in tight tussles.

Coach Ricky Stuart has laid down the law to an under-pressure Canberra outfit as they desperately try to save their spluttering NRL season.

The Raiders had last weekend off to stew on yet another last-gasp loss, this time to Penrith, their sixth defeat by a converted try or less for the year.

Canberra's premiership dream is slowly evaporating after they slumped to 10th on the ladder ahead of crucial home games against Brisbane and North Queensland in the next two rounds.

Prop Junior Paulo said Stuart had asked the players to hold each other accountable on and off the field before sending them on a short mid-season break.

"We had Sticky lay down the law to us at the back end of last week in our last training session," Paulo said.

The Broncos pipped the Raiders in round four with a late field goal, a match which lingers in Paulo's mind ahead of Saturday's return fixture at GIO Stadium.

"Something that we really need to build towards is winning those close games," Paulo said.

"In golden point as well we haven't been able to seal a win. It's something we've been practising at training."

Five-eighth Blake Austin admitted the frustrated Raiders may have been trying too hard to fight their way out of a form slump.

"There's been a real focus on probably releasing the pressure gauge a little bit," Austin said.

"I don't think it's the win-loss record that's bringing the frustration and the pressure.

"I think it's more the expectation we've had on ourselves and obviously in a small way what everyone else's expectations have been too."

In a boost to the Raiders, Paulo's front row partner in crime Shannon Boyd is set to return from a knee injury.

"He's a massive contributor to our team. The way he carries himself on the field he's a real leader out there," Paulo said.

For Brisbane, a shoulder injury to playmaker Anthony Milford has ended Ben Hunt's reserve-grade exile.

He has been named on the bench with Benji Marshall and Kodi Nikorima named as starting halves.
