The nation's capital is celebrating its 100th birthday with a variety of events around Lake Burley Griffin, including the world's longest bubbly bar.
Up to 100,000 people were expected to visit the five staging areas in Canberra on Monday, ahead of fireworks late tonight.
Event director Geoff Cobham said the city had been very lucky with the sunny weather. "I've never had a more perfect day for an event," he told reporters.
The 800-metre champagne bar, on the southern side of the lake, was due to serve more than 3000 people with free glasses of Centenary bubbly created for the occasion by local winemakers.
Canberra's official birthday is Tuesday March 12, but the city was celebrating with a public holiday and festivities on Monday.
On Tuesday, there will be a formal ceremony at the Foundation Stones in front of Parliament House, attended by ACT Chief Minister Katy Gallagher, Governor-General Quentin Bryce and Prime Minister Julia Gillard.
