The Washington Capitals claimed a 2-1 success over the Toronto Maple Leafs, which puts them a win away from advancing in the NHL playoffs.
The Capitals, who were the best team in the regular campaign, have been pushed hard by the Maple Leafs in the post-season but now lead the best-of-seven series 3-2.
Justin Williams' overtime goal settled game five after efforts from TJ Oshie and Auston Matthews had earlier made it all-square after the regulation three periods.
The Boston Bruins extended their series by beating the Ottawa Senators 3-2 in double overtime, with Sean Kuraly the hero.
Kuraly scored late in the second period to level game five at 2-2 and then struck the winner in the second period of overtime to earn the win.
The Senators lead the series 3-2.
