Canberra are just one WNBL defeat from equalling the worst losing streak in the club's history after falling 84-66 to Townsville, their ninth straight loss.
In a week where injured star Lauren Jackson was shut down until the new year, the Capitals were limited to just nine points in a decisive third quarter that ensured they remain winless to start the season.
Defeat against Melbourne next week will see them equal a record 10-game slump set in 1996-97.
For the Fire, the comprehensive victory completes a strong weekend that included a tense 88-85 win over interstate rivals South-East Queensland that cemented third spot.
The defending champions were led in both games by veteran pivot Suzy Batkovic, who amassed an impressive 53 points on 62 per cent shooting.
At the pointy end of the table, the Sydney Flames and Perth Lynx both declared themselves competition pace-setters with wins over the weekend.
Flames captain Katie-Rae Ebzery scored a game-high 29 points and eight assists in a 94-69 rout of the Stars but the contribution from a number of teammates prompted her to label this year's roster the deepest in her five years in Sydney.
Four teammates also got into double figures.
"In every spot, it's been really exciting to put this team together," Ebzery said.
"We're coming together really nicely and everyone's knowing their roles. It makes us really hard to guard. It's a really full roster and it's exciting where we can head to."
In Perth, American guard Sami Whitcomb connected on five three-pointers in a 93-85 win over Adelaide, extending their winning streak to four.
Whitcomb finished the night with a game-high 28 points but was helped by a double-double from fellow countryman Betnijah Laney, who nabbed 10 boards to go with her 15 points.
In the round's other matches, the Bendigo Boomers were trounced 78-58 by Melbourne on Saturday but bounced back to destroy the Dandenong Rangers 63-49 on Sunday.
