Captaincy will lift game to new level: DCE

Daly Cherry-Evans says the Queensland captaincy will take his game to another level ahead in next week's State of Origin series opener in Brisbane.

It's fair to say the Queensland captaincy is agreeing with Daly Cherry-Evans.

After his first Maroons training session Cherry-Evans says he has not only come to terms with the surprise honour, he believes it is set to take his game to another level.

Cherry-Evans also eased concerns about his ankle injury by running freely on Thursday in Brisbane.

Then again, the halfback reckoned he was feeling no pain after being recently anointed as Queensland's 15th skipper.

Cherry-Evans claimed he was now primed to put his own stamp on the Maroons captaincy after capping a remarkable comeback by taking over the reins from retired greats Greg Inglis and Billy Slater.

"I would love to find another level at Origin and hopefully captaincy will be that thing that will trigger it," he said.

"It's not an overwhelming feeling to be captain. I have grown accustomed to it at club level.

"That comes off the confidence I have in the role I have in the side."

Cherry-Evans was once considered "never to be picked again" for Queensland after speculation he had rubbed Maroons senior players the wrong way in an ill-fated 2015 stint.

He finally ended a three-year exile in last year's Origin III game, inspiring an 18-12 victory.

Cherry-Evans completed his redemption story when he was named skipper of a new-look Maroons on Monday night.

It was a whirlwind turnaround but the man known as DCE reckoned he had taken it in his stride.

"I have got my head around being captain to be honest," he said.

"That's not saying I know everything about captaining my state - I don't know everything.

"But I am confident with the person and the leader that I am in this side.

"I will continue to build trust with my teammates. The more trust I build, the more they will listen to me out on the field."

Now that he has the Maroons reins, Cherry-Evans has no intention of letting them go.

"I have always been very ambitious when it comes to setting high standards and goals for myself," he said.

"After missing three years of Origin I want to be here for as long as I possibly can and play at a high level.

"I am not going to put a number on it. I will take it game by game because things can change quickly for people in rugby league.

"But I want to play for Queensland for a long time providing I am up for it."

Cherry-Evans underwent ankle surgery five weeks ago but gave himself the green light on Thursday.

Other injury concerns - debutant bench utility Moses Mybe (groin) and prop Jai Arrow (quad) have already declared themselves certain starters.
