A woman is fighting for life and a child in a pram has narrowly escaped injury after a car mounted the curb, flipped and ploughed into them in Sydney.

The 67-year-old driver left the road and struck the pram, before careering into the pedestrian, who was walking along the footpath on Chatswood's busy Victoria Avenue on Friday morning, police say.

The 32-year-old woman has been taken to the Royal North Shore hospital in a critical condition suffering head and limb injuries.

A witness told the Seven Network the woman was "collected" by the car and "just dropped, she wasn't moving".

The man who was driving the car was taken to the same hospital with minor injuries and will undergo mandatory blood and urine testing.

The child was uninjured and was taken by family to a medical centre to be checked as a precaution while another woman, believed to be the child's mother, was treated by NSW Ambulance paramedics for shock.

Footage uploaded to social media shows the smashed-up silver car being towed away in front of a number of damaged shopfronts.

Police said it was very lucky that more people weren't hit on the busy street, which has since reopened.
