Britain's most senior Roman Catholic clergyman, Cardinal Keith O'Brien, has attacked UK government plans to legalise gay marriage.

Cardinal O'Brien described proposals to introduce gay marriage as "a grotesque subversion of a universally accepted human right".

The government is launching a consultation on the issue later this month but said it is committed to introducing gay marriage, with Prime Minister David Cameron giving the policy explicit backing.
