A Queensland woman has been accused of so badly neglecting and mistreating an older woman that she may never fully recover.
Police were shocked by the unhygienic conditions at the Tarampa property where the 77-year-old woman lived before she was taken to Ipswich hospital on Wednesday.
She remains there largely unresponsive, and is not expected to fully recover.
Acting Detective Senior Sergeant Lee Fortune says the conditions at the property and the alleged lack of care for the older woman had distressed police.
"It will be alleged that the conditions at that property are extremely unhygienic and have led to the condition that this 77-year-old female is in," he told reporters on Monday.
The woman's 56-year-old carer has been charged with grievous bodily harm and failing to provide the necessities of life.
"It is extremely sad that a 77-year-old female, who was supposed to be cared for by that person, would be living in long-term in this sort of condition," he said.
Police began investigating after ambulance officers raised concerns about the woman's injuries.
They had been called to the property on Wednesday and found the elderly woman in cardiac arrest with an extremely low body temperature, police say.
The detective said she is expected to have some sort of long term impairment as a result of her alleged treatment by the carer.
Police say authorities enforced bio-hazard measures at the property west of Brisbane after allegedly uncovering an unsafe amount of animal faeces.
Police are working with the RSPCA after finding horses, geese and chickens at the property and say further charges are possible.
The woman will appear in the Ipswich Magistrates Court on Tuesday.
