Troubled megastars Wayne Carey and Gary Ablett are among a crop being considered for AFL legend status.

The title will be given at the annual Hall of Fame dinner on Tuesday night with Malcolm Blight and Jason Dunstall also in the legend frame.

One of esteemed quartet is favoured to be elevated to join the 26 ex-players already honoured with the title.

"We have six people going into the Hall of Fame tomorrow and one person, who is already in the hall, being upgraded to legend status," an AFL spokesman said on Monday.

"Of the six who are being inducted, the rules state that at least two must be classified as recent retirees whose careers finished within the last 10 years."

One of the half-dozen fresh inductees must be a coach/umpire/administrator or media representative.

Carey and Ablett both endured tough times post-AFL, with off-field controversies tarnishing their reputations.

Both were involved in drug allegations, Ablett has remained a distant figure while Carey is back in the fold as a commentator.

But both are undisputed on-field giants who, with Dunstall, led a fondly remembered goal-kicking frenzy in the late 1980s-early 1990s.

Dunstall has had the most post-playing career impact in the AFL with a successful stint in Hawthorn's executive, as well as maintaining a solid media presence.

Former Sydney and St Kilda forward Tony Lockett - who played in the same era - achieved legend status two years ago.

The legend will be announced at the Hall of Fame dinner in Adelaide on Tuesday night.
