Carlton's Curnow beats AFL ban at tribunal

Carlton's Charlie Curnow has successfully had a one-game ban downgraded to a $2000 fine at the AFL tribunal.

Carlton young gun Charlie Curnow is free to play against GWS after having a striking charge downgraded at the AFL tribunal.

Curnow was offered a one-match ban by AFL match review officer Michael Christian for intentionally striking Gold Coast's Steven May.

But at Tuesday night's hearing the Blues' legal team successfully argued the action was careless, which saw the penalty downgraded to a $2000 fine.

The 21-year-old's availability for Sunday's clash at Etihad Stadium is welcome news for the Blues, who remain bottom of the ladder despite scoring their second win of the season against the Suns.

It follows Christian's decision to clear Carlton star Patrick Cripps of any wrongdoing in a tackle that concussed David Swallow, leaving him eligible to win the Brownlow Medal.

The young Blue is the second player in betting markets for the Brownlow behind hot favourite Tom Mitchell of Hawthorn.

All other players accepted their sanctions.

Suns co-captain May will miss one match for rough conduct on Ed Curnow and Adelaide's Kyle Cheney will miss their must-win Showdown against Port Adelaide after accepting a one-game ban for rough conduct on Melbourne's Bayley Fritsch.

Sydney's Zak Jones will miss two games for his high bump on Essendon's Kyle Langford.

Brisbane's Mitch Robinson, Port Adelaide's Tom Rockliff and West Coast's Willie Rioli all accepted fines, while the Power's Steven Motlop was fined twice for misconduct.
