Carmichael mine challenge due in Qld court

Traditional owners will continue their fight against the proposed $16.5 billion Carmichael mine in the Federal Court in Brisbane.

A legal challenge against Australia's largest proposed coal mine in Queensland's Galilee Basin is set to continue in the Federal Court in Brisbane.

During the first day of the hearing on Monday the Wangan and Jagalingou Traditional Owners' Council accused Indian mining giant Adani of misleading a native title tribunal by exaggerating the economic benefits of its planned $16.5 billion Carmichael mine.

The group is appealing a National Native Title Tribunal decision that allowed the state to issue mining licences for the project without traditional owners' consent.

They argue the tribunal's decision should be set aside because Adani distorted the decision-making process by failing to provide certain material about the project's economic benefits.

However, Queensland Resources Council chief executive Michael Roche has said many Wangan and Jagalingou people wanted the mine to proceed.

The hearing is due to continue in the Federal Court in Brisbane on Tuesday.
