The Super League disciplinary hearing into an allegation that former Canberra and Sydney Roosters winger Justin Carney racially abused an opponent has been adjourned.

The case was due to be heard in Leeds on Tuesday evening but Carney's club Salford asked for it to be carried over to next week and have agreed to stand the player down for Sunday's game against Widnes.

A statement from the Rugby Football League said: "Following a request from Salford Red Devils, this matter has been adjourned until next week.

"Salford have proposed the player will not compete in any fixture before the operational rules tribunal hear the case. Therefore, the chairman of the tribunal has granted the adjournment as requested."

Carney was sent off by referee Jack Smith 26 minutes into the Red Devils' 29-22 win over Toronto Wolfpack in the fifth round of the Ladbrokes Challenge Cup at the AJ Bell Stadium on Sunday.

It is thought he was shown the red card for comments directed at Toronto's former Leeds prop forward Ryan Bailey.

Salford announced after the match that they would be carrying out their own investigation into the circumstances leading up to the dismissal and the 28-year-old was charged by the RFL's match review panel with verbal abuse based on race or colour.

Carney is facing a grade F offence, the most severe category, which normally carries a ban of eight matches or more. Alternatively, if found guilty, he could be handed a fixed time period of suspension.

The former Castleford player does not have the option of an early guilty plea.
