Hard-nosed back-rower Paul Carter has signed a two-year NRL contract extension with South Sydney.

Carter has rebuilt his career under Rabbitohs coach Michael Maguire and on Thursday inked a deal which will keep him at Redfern until 2018.

The 24-year-old son of Penrith great Steve Carter was at a crossroads a year and a half ago when he was sacked by Gold Coast for a string of drink driving offences.

After being thrown a career lifeline by the Rabbitohs, he has worked his way into their starting side this year.

"I'm really excited to know that I'll be part of the South Sydney club for the next few years at least," Carter said.

"The Rabbitohs gave me a chance when others wouldn't and I want to repay that faith to the club, my teammates and the members and fans."

The former Australian schoolboys representative faced being left on the scrap heap after the Titans ripped up his $250,000 contract following two drink-driving offences in six months.

He rebuilt his life, entering rehab and working as an insulation installer before moving to Sydney for a second chance at a rugby league career.

"Paul has worked very hard on and off the field and he is starting to see the benefits of this," Maguire said.

"His growth as not only a rugby league player, but as a man as well, has been a pleasure to see and he's committed to working on all areas of his game to make sure he makes the most of his opportunities."
