CAS to render verdicts on banned Russians

The CAS verdicts on appeals from 39 Russian athletes given lifetime Olympic bans for doping violations at the 2014 Sochi Games will be announced on Thursday.

The Court of Arbitration of Sport (CAS) will issue its rulings on the appeals from 39 Russian athletes against Olympic Games lifetime bans on Thursday.

The CAS says its secretary general Matthieu Reeb will make a statement at 5pm local time in Pyeongchang, South Korea, where the Winter Olympics start next week.

At the same time a media release will be issued on the CAS website.

A total of 42 Russian athletes appealed to CAS against the bans imposed by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in connection with doping practices at the Sochi 2014 Games.

They include gold medallists Alexander Zubkov (bobsleigh), Alexander Tretiakov (skeleton) and Alexander Legkov (cross-country skiing).

The cases of three retired biathletes will be taken up at a later date.

The CAS started proceedings with hearings last week in Geneva, which included testimony from whistleblower Grigory Rodchenkov, the former head of Moscow's anti-doping laboratory who now lives at a secret location in the United States.

Russia has repeatedly denied any state involvement in the doping which was exposed by an independent report commissioned by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA).
