Case not made for more Mid East troops:ALP

Labor won't say whether or not it would support sending more troops to fight Islamic State if the US asked.

Australia should consider sending more troops to fight Islamic State if it's in the national interest but the case is still to be made, Labor says.

Opposition foreign affairs spokeswoman Penny Wong wouldn't be drawn on whether or not her party would support such a request from the United States, which will soon finalise a new strategy for the Middle East.

"There hasn't been a case made publicly as to why extending Australia's current commitment to the fight against Daesh would be in Australia's national interest," she told ABC Radio on Tuesday.
