Cash accepted to falsify WA licence tests

Contractors were paid to falsify driving tests and vehicle examinations, WA's Corruption and Crime Commission has heard.

Contractors accepted cash to falsify driving tests and vehicle examinations, Western Australia's corruption watchdog has been told.

The Corruption and Crime Commission is conducting hearings as part of a wider investigation into the licensing of vehicles and drivers by Department of Transport contractors and local government employees.

Counsel assisting the commissioner Alan Troy said in his opening address on Wednesday that some witnesses had links to organised crime.

"The individuals who will be examined, some of whom are associated with organised criminal elements, have taken advantage of weaknesses in systems associated with outsourcing of services previously provided by the DoT," he said.

"They have done so simply by going to corrupt individuals who are contracted to provide public regulatory functions."

Mr Troy gave an example of a driving assessor who accepted $100 to pass a motorcycle rider on a practical test that was never conducted.

The CCC is also investigating whether local government staff who processed data onto the department's systems had exploited the system.

The hearing continues.
