Cash splash shrinks WA's budget wishlist

WA's federal budget wishlist is a lot shorter after Prime Minister Scott Morrison last week announced $1.6 billion in infrastructure funding for the state.

The West Australian government doesn't have much of a federal budget wishlist after last week's infrastructure funding commitment ticked a lot of boxes.

On his second trip to Perth this month, Prime Minister Scott Morrison announced a $1.6 billion commitment for "congestion-busting" metropolitan and major regional road projects in WA.

It included $140 million towards finishing the Albany Ring Road in the Great Southern region, which has a preliminary total cost estimate of $172 million, and a $248 million contribution towards improving the Karratha-Tom Price Road.

The Pilbara road is being upgraded and sealed, with the cost of stage three and four totalling $310 million.

It was historically a transport route for asbestos from Wittenoom, and about 12,000 square metres of contamination was recently removed.

Cash for the two projects was top of Premier Mark McGowan's wishlist, but Mr Morrison indicated earlier this month that was a big ask, saying his government had already gone "above and beyond" for WA including GST top-up payments.

Mr McGowan's wish for more federal money for his government's flagship Metronet rail project was also granted last week with $207.5 million committed for three level crossing removals.

That's on top of $1.84 billion the federal government has previously allocated for Metronet, which includes $500 million for the Ellenbrook line part of the project.

Federal Labor has promised $850 million towards the Ellenbrook link to Morley, which Mr McGowan says he'd like the federal government to match.

The Coalition also last week pledged $115 million towards the $215 million upgrade of the dilapidated Fremantle Traffic Bridge, which Labor has already matched.

Labor has also matched a total contribution to Tonkin Highway works of $929 million, a figure the federal government hit after chipping in an extra $151.1 million on Thursday.

It will be revealed on Tuesday if the $1.6 billion cash splash covers the forward estimates or a longer period.
