The day before he starts in his job, Australia's new Race Discrimination Commissioner Tim Soutphommasane says it is important to fight against all kinds of racism, be it intentional or not.

In an interview with NITV News, Dr Soutphommasane said that while some people may feel the conversation about racism in Australia is a "storm in a teacup", it is important to fight against all kinds of racism, be it intentional or not.

The commissioner cited Eddie McGuire's recent remark, in which he compared Indigenous AFL player Adam Goodes to King Kong, as an example of casual racism that Australians can all learn from.

"The case of Eddie McGuire and Adam Goodes is a lesson for all of us to think about how we can confront, and have a conversation about racism in a more mature way," he said.
