Australian Oscar-winner Cate Blanchett is set to make her Broadway debut alongside Richard Roxburgh in a new adaptation of Anton Chekhov's play The Present.

The Sydney Theatre Company announced on Thursday that the pair will perform Andrew Upton's powerful adaptation on Broadway at the end of the year.

"New York, New York! We're thrilled to be taking Andrew Upton's new adaptation of Chekhov's The Present to Broadway at the end of this year," the STC tweeted.

The pair previously appeared together in the company's production of Chekhov's Uncle Vanya.

Blanchett will play the role of Anna Petrovna, a complex yet independent widow, alongside a sarcastic and witty Platonov, played by Roxburgh.

Designer Alice Babidge will be the backbone behind the set and costumes, while sound and music will be orchestrated by Stefan Gregory and lighting by Nick Schlieper, Deadline reports.

The play has inspired various adaptations over the years including Michael Frayn's Wild Honey, featuring Ian McKellen and Kathryn Walker, which appeared on Broadway in 1986.
