Red hot Oscar favourite Cate Blanchett has made her entrance on the Oscars red carpet in a sparkling nude champagne gown and elegant down-do.

"It's Armani, it's heavy but I love it," she said of the elaborately beaded dress which dripped with Swarovski crystals.

She accessorised with long drop earrings.

Blanchett, who is up for Best Actress for her role in the Woody Allen film Blue Jasmine, says the troubled socialite she plays in the film is also very fashion conscious.

"She's very label obsessed, that's the outward, but inwardly she's falling apart at the seams and that was a fascinating and quite tragic thing to play," she said.

Nude was the look of the night along with metallics and white, and some stars opting for shades of blue ranging from powder blue to midnight.

Jennifer Lawrence bucked the trend in bright red, which matched the carpet as she tripped over a cone on her way up.

Portia de Rossi, the wife of presenter Ellen DeGeneres wore a Naeem Khan ivory lace high-neck gown that despite looking a bit like a doily was gorgeous on the Aussie actress.

"I've been upstairs all day with Ellen. She's been preparing like crazy," de Rossi said.

Fellow Aussie Naomi Watts was a glittering snowflake in a white cap-sleeved Calvin Klein Collection dress and The Wolf of Wall Street star Margot Robbie wore a black dress to go with her newly brunette hair, dyed for her latest film.

Also in black were Anne Hathaway, Julia Roberts and Charlize Theron.

Lupita Nyong'o, nominated for Best Supporting Actress for 12 Years a Slave, proved a red carpet goddess once again in a long powder blue Prada gown with a plunging neckline and gold headband.

"This is Prada and it was made for me. It's a blue that reminds me of Nairobi so I wanted to have a little bit of home," she said.

She completed the look with a frog ring, a family totem.

Amy Adams, nominated for Best Actress for American Hustle, wore Navy blue Gucci Couture and Tiffany jewels

"I put this on and it felt like me. I felt like I was one with the dress."

Liza Minnelli also opted for blue with an electric blue satin pant suit and matching blue streak in her hair.

Kristen Bell, who provided the voice of Anna in Frozen which is nominated for Best Animated Feature, arrived with hubby Dax Shepard in a metallic Cavalli number.

"I put it on and knew immediately. I kind of felt a Frozen vibe," she said.

Kristin Chenoweth dazzled in a gold Roberto Cavalli gown "It's very art deco. I just loved the beading work on it and it's comfortable."

The Men also rocked the white look including Jared Leto, Ryan Seacrest and flamboyant US figure skater Johnny Weir.

Leto, favourite to win Best Supporting Actor, teamed his white suit jacket with a burgundy bow tie.

"I never ever wear suits... It was just a fun opportunity to do something old school and classic," he said.

Pharrell Williams, nominated for Best Original Song, left his famous Mounties hat but kept the madness coming in a dinner jacket and bow tie with shorts.

The Help star Viola Davis elegant in emerald green satin Escada and E News presenter Giuliana Rancic was a winner off the carpet, choosing a princessy Paolo Sebastian gown with a silver bodice and dusty pink skirt by young Adelaide designer Paul Vasileff.
