A 10-goal second-quarter has led Geelong to an 85-point AFL trouncing of Brisbane at the Gabba on Saturday night.

The Cats won 25.13 (163) to 11.12 (78), against a Lions side that went into the game buoyed by their biggest win of the season against Essendon last weekend.

Brisbane began promisingly, with the Cats' nine-point lead at the first break flattering the visitors.

The second quarter was disastrous for the Lions, however, committing nine clangers as the Cats notched 10 majors from 19 inside 50 entries to increase their lead to 54 points at the main break.

The teams traded goals in the third quarter before the Cats pulled away in the fourth to inflict the Lions' biggest defeat of the season.

Tom Hawkins kicked four for the Cats with James Parsons and Mark Blicavs grabbing three each.

The win keeps Geelong in third place, now just two points off the top, while the Lions remain at the foot of the ladder.

Cats coach Chris Scott hailed his team's professionalism, which applied in particular to star midfielder Patrick Dangerfield, who stayed in Victoria to attend the birth of his son on Thursday, while the rest of the side spent the week in Queensland.

"We didn't have any doubt that he would handle it as a professional," Scott said.

"It's fantastic to have some of your best players, I'd throw Mitch Duncan into that group as well, with Joel Selwood and Mark Blicav, who are also your most professional.

"We really value the week that we've had in Queensland. The professionalism the boys approached the week with, marrying it up with some down time, was a credit to them.

Despite their lofty position, Scott insists his side remain far from the finished article and were a "work in progress".

"We are as aware as any team in the competition that it can turn really quickly," Scott said.

"If you have a few bad games they're pretty quick to come for you.

Lions coach Chris Fagan said his team will keep taking the game on from the back, despite it proving costly against the Cats.

"In the second quarter we were blown away, particularly on turnover, and a lot of it was unforced," Fagan said.

"That's guys taking the game on. Last week we were terrific in that area, tonight not so good.

"We'll live and learn and grow from that."
