A tornado has ripped through a part of northeast Victoria, killing livestock and damaging property.

The small tornado hit the area near of Yarrawonga, including at Peechelba, on Friday afternoon.

"These tornadoes are very difficult to forecast ..... and unfortunately we have had some reports of property damage and stock loss associated with that storm that moved through the north-east," the Bureau of Meteorology's Michael Efron said on Saturday.

"They are fairly localised events - they do tend to develop quickly and then weaken quickly as well."

A video on Facebook showed the tornado forming and touching the ground near Peechelba.

"My car started getting peppered with what I thought was debris, possible it was hail, so I turned car around to face opposite direction and ride it out with 3 kids in the car, at one point our car was rocking, it didnt last long," Tamara Louise wrote on social media about the storm.

The State Emergency Services did confirm the "wind event" had killed cattle but could not say how many.

The storm also damaged cars and sheds in the area, but despite the severe conditions the SES only received 15 call outs for the area.
